The attacks last night were a shameful display of racism against people who live and work here, in some cases for decades. The Community Relations Council unequivocally condemns the violence, disorder and intimidation witnessed in Belfast and other areas.
We support and echo the clear condemnation already expressed by Ministers and political leaders across the region. Whatever concerns people may hold, there can be no justification for attacks on individuals, damage to homes or businesses, threats against families, or assaults on police officers and emergency services.
Many of those involved in the violence are young people. We appeal to them and those influencing them, to remember that this senseless behaviour will harm themselves too, with many ending up with a criminal record. Those trying to protect young people and divert them from street violence are welcome to contact the Community Relations Council for support.
Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by these events, including those who have been injured, those whose homes or communities have been targeted, and those who are feeling fearful or vulnerable because of the violence.
Those who are causing this destruction and putting lives at risk do not speak for most people here. Over the years enormous progress has been made because communities have chosen dialogue over division and peaceful engagement over confrontation. At moments of heightened tension, that commitment to respect, restraint and the rule of law is more important than ever.
We thank and encourage community leaders, elected representatives, faith leaders, youth workers and local organisations who have been working together to help calm tensions, challenge rumours and misinformation, and support those affected. We also urge anyone with influence in their community to use it responsibly to promote peace and discourage further disorder.
We also thank the Police and Fire & Rescue Service for their work to protect people and property from these appalling, senseless attacks.
The Community Relations Council stands in solidarity with all communities affected by these events and remains committed to supporting efforts that strengthen relationships, build understanding and foster a shared, peaceful future for everyone who calls this place their home.
