Creative Connections project creates short film Bridges Between with young people

Bridges Between Youth Initiatives | NICRC

The Creative Connections project, delivered by Youth Initiatives, brought together young people from Protestant and Catholic communities in Derry/Londonderry for a six-month programme focused on building positive relationships through creativity. Through weekly good relations workshops, participants used film and music as tools to explore identity, understanding, and the importance of a shared future.

The Community Relations Council supports the organisation through its Core Funding Scheme.

As part of the project, the young people collaborated to create their own original short film, entitled Bridges Between. Over the course of the programme, they were involved in every stage of production – writing, performing, directing, filming and producing the film themselves.

Bridges Between tells the story of two young people from different backgrounds who are brought together reluctantly, shaped by stereotypes and assumptions they have learned about one another. Initially resistant to working together, they gradually begin to listen, challenge their perceptions, and recognise the value of respect, understanding, and cooperation. The film reflects the experiences of many young people living in divided communities and highlights how meaningful relationships can develop when people move beyond prejudice and choose connection over division.

The project concluded with a special premiere screening of Bridges Between on 25 March 2026 at St Pio House. Family members, friends, staff, and supporters gathered to celebrate the creativity, teamwork, and personal growth demonstrated by the young people throughout the programme. The event marked the culmination of months of hard work and collaboration, while showcasing a powerful message of unity, hope, and positive change.
