Londonderry Bands Forum Launches First Children’s Book – “The Adventures of Bandie”

The Londonderry Bands Forum celebrated an exciting milestone with the launch of its first-ever children’s book, The Adventures of Bandie, at the Central Library on Foyle Street.

The Community Relations Council supports the organisation through its Core Funding Scheme.

Pupils and teachers from Fountain Primary School and Longtower Primary School joined the event for a fun-filled morning of storytelling, music and creativity. Local councillors and representatives from community organisations also attended to show their support for this innovative educational project.

The Adventures of Bandie tells the story of Bandie the bass drum who travels through different instruments and musical sections trying to find where he belongs. Along the way, Bandie learns important lessons about inclusion, resilience, and teamwork.

The book was launched as part of Good Relations Week 2025, which celebrates efforts across the region to build understanding and friendship between communities. The Londonderry Bands Forum believes Bandie’s story captures this message perfectly, showing that diversity is a strength and that cooperation can turn individual beats into harmony.

Andrew Lynch, Londonderry Bands Forum, said: “For those who might not know us, the Londonderry Bands Forum is a community organisation that works to promote understanding, respect, and shared learning through music and culture.

“We believe that marching bands are not just about parades or performances: they’re about people, community, and belonging. The Adventures of Bandie captures that spirit. It teaches children that everyone has a role to play, that it’s okay to be different, and that when we all come together – just like the instruments in a band – we can create something truly beautiful.”

Andrew also extended thanks to Ross Duncan, Illustrator of The Adventures of Bandie, and to everyone involved in the design and printing of the book. He also acknowledged the support of the Community Relations Council and Derry City and Strabane District Council, as well as the schools and community partners who help make projects like this possible.

The Adventures of Bandie aims to inspire children not only to explore the world of music but also to appreciate the joy and importance of reading. Copies of the book will be shared with local schools and community groups as part of the Forum’s continuing work to promote inclusion, creativity, and cultural understanding across the city and district.
