Launch of a short film “For the Love of Bands”

Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin, Tuesday 18th September 7pm – 8pm

The Droichead Project has produced a short film focusing on the individuals, communities and families who support marching band culture. Often behind the scenes, this important contribution to the culture of marching bands is rarely represented in the media and perhaps unknown to many of the communities not traditionally connected with marching bands from the Unionist tradition. Set against the backdrop of The Relief of Derry Parade, the film focuses on people who support and contribute to the culture in a variety of ways, including fundraising, hosting travelling bands and marchers, making regalia or providing a service on the day of the march. It also includes contributions from musicians and ABOD who talk of their appreciation for the support they receive.

The film was made as a way of highlighting and appreciating the support bands get from within their families and communities and as an educational resource to inform people about the unseen aspects of a culture that is often maligned and misrepresented.

Significantly, the event will take place in Cultúrlann, an Irish Language and Cultural organisation. The organisation seeks to contribute to the ongoing education and discussion about the cultures that exist in this city in an effort to move from a place of tolerance and acceptance to celebration.

It is envisaged that the marching band community will benefit from the unusual glimpse into the family traditions and support behind the culture and the Irish Language community will benefit from inviting a new audience into its cultural home in Derry and showing that it is open to learning about other cultures by resourcing the production of this film.
