Bringing Communities Together through Expressions of Culture
NWTTT was formed in 1995. It was set up to organise workshops, seminars and performances in the medium of cross cultural song, verse, dance and music. Participants are invited to demonstrate their skills in a cross cultural festival, which includes the ethnic minority community. The aim is to bring communities together and celebrate what we have in common and increase respect for diversity. This project builds on last year’s week-long festival by organising musical and culture workshops and discussion groups throughout February and March.
Project Aims
‘Bringing our communities together through the expression of culture’ saw 13 musical and cultural workshops and 3 discussion sessions taking place in Dungiven, supporting the wider North West community. The cross cultural workshops, seminars and end of programme celebration event promote cultural diversity and provide opportunities to share, learn and perform music and dance from different traditions and cultures.
Objectives
- To bring all communities in Dungiven and surrounding areas together for 13 evening workshops teaching the Flute, Highland dance, Irish Dance, Ethnic Minority Music, Drums and bagpipes. There is also storytelling and songs from all cultural traditions.
- The workshops was attended by 30 people from cross community backgrounds, with older and younger people participating
- 3 discussion workshops were held looking at culture and diversity with representatives coming from local schools, community groups and BME groups.
- An end of programme Diversity celebration event featuring invited guests and performances from the tutors and participants took place in Dungiven on 30 March with an estimated attendance of 350 people.
This project received funding from the Community Relations/Cultural Diversity Grant Scheme.
