As part of their recent Diversity Week celebrations, Integrated College Glengormley invited coaches from Ulster GAA and Ulster Camogie to deliver taster sessions in Gaelic Games to their Year 8 and year 9 pupils.
The Community Relations Council supports Ulster GAA through its Core Funding Scheme.
As part of the taster sessions, young people from different religious, ethnic and cultural backgrounds enjoyed participating in games many had never had a chance to experience or see before.
Ulster Camogie coaches delivered fun activities to girls who had a chance to try on a helmet and hold a hurl for the first time. Ulster Handball coaches delivered introductory handball sessions on the tennis courts, and everyone had a chance to learn the rules of Gaelic Football before participating in small-sided games. Perhaps the highlight for many was GAA Rounders, which had really positive feedback, especially from those who managed to hit a few "Home Runs".
Ultimately the purpose of the day’s activities was to introduce new games from different cultures in a fun positive environment. The school are now interested in a Gaelic Games coaching block which is planned to be delivered in the Autumn terms with Ulster GAA’s CRC funded staff.
