Remembering the ordinary, the everyday and the common place from the time of the Troubles.

A Workshop at Belfast Exposed: Remembering the ordinary, the everyday and the common place from the time of the Troubles.

What is a Mnemonic Device? It is a technique that a person can use to help them improve their ability to remember something; a simple shortcut that helps us associate the information we want to remember with an image, an artefact, a sentence, or a word. It is a mechanism for retrieving personally memories, unlike memorials, which are typically fraught with the association of war, heroism and patriotism; or historical markers that are designed to reinforce 'authorized' narratives, a particular version of history.

The Workshop

Participate in creating guidelines & fresh ideas for a Mnemonic Device (memory marker) for the City of Belfast. Work with artists and designers to develop & visualize meaningful concepts for a series of public artworks & urban interventions that prompt passersby to share personal recollections & idiosyncratic stories of everyday life lived against the backdrop of Belfast's most challenging moment: The Troubles.

Who Should Participate

Artists, designers, architects, historians, storytellers, writers, journalists & non-artistic collaborators welcome.

Where/ When: Free workshop, March 2nd & 3rd, 2019.
