St Columb’s Hall in Derry~Londonderry came alive recently as Africa Day 2026 delivered a vibrant and successful celebration of African culture, community and inclusion.
Hosted by the African Caribbean Community Network (ACCN) and supported by Apex, Ark, Choice and Radius Housing Associations through the ‘Housing for All’ Shared Housing Programme, the free, family-friendly event attracted a strong turnout from across the city and beyond with over 700 attendees.
People of all ages enjoyed an exciting and diverse programme featuring live music, traditional and contemporary dance performances, cultural showcases, interactive workshops, children’s activities, and a wide range of African cuisine. The event highlighted the richness and diversity of African heritage while providing opportunities for meaningful cultural exchange and community connection.
The event was also supported by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, Derry City and Strabane District Council, St Columb’s Hall Trust and Greater Shantallow Area Partnership.
Doreen Murugi, CEO of ACCN, said, “Africa Day 2026 was a fantastic success and a true celebration of culture, identity and unity. It was wonderful to see so many people from different backgrounds come together to share in the experience. Events like this are vital in building understanding, strengthening relationships and celebrating the diversity that enriches our society.”
Speaking on behalf of the four supporting housing associations, Warren Kerr, Good Relations Officer at Apex Housing Association, said, “We are delighted to have supported another successful Africa Day. The event demonstrated the power of cultural celebration in bringing communities together. Through our work within shared housing, we remain committed to fostering inclusive environments where diversity is valued and people feel connected.”
Andy Mullan, Good Relations Officer with Northern Ireland Housing Executive, said, “Africa Day continues to be a standout example of how community events can promote positive relations and celebrate diversity. It was encouraging to see such strong engagement and participation, reflecting the inclusive spirit of the Housing for All Programme.”
Africa Day was supported by the Department for Communities and the Housing Executive’s ‘Housing for All’ Shared Housing Programme. The Programme has its origins in the NI Executive Together: Building a United Community Strategy which reflects the Executive’s commitment to improving community relations and continuing the journey towards a more united and shared society.
Locally, Apex, Ark, Choice and Radius each deliver shared housing developments across the city – including Woodlands Avenue, Tillie and Henderson, Rosses Gate and Ebrington Oaks – alongside good relations programmes that promote inclusion, wellbeing, arts, culture, education and community engagement. A potential of £45m will be invested in these shared neighbourhoods and their associated good relations plans, which are delivered in partnership with local advisory group stakeholders and residents.
