Aims and Objectives

“Promote good community relations by encouraging honest and open dialogue, enabling people to have a better understanding of and respect for each other’s views and opinions.”The long term goal that the forum wishes to achieve is:

Work at grass root levels to ensure, that all residents of the borough can live together, in a safe, pleasant, vibrant and shared community where everyone feels equal and welcome.”

Projects and Activities

Projects and Activities:

Examples of some of the programmes and activities run to date which have brought Nationalists, Unionists and representatives of other traditions together for contact, dialogue and reconciliation purposes include:

Building of a peace and reconciliation centre for everyone that is easily accessed by everyone.

16 people fully trained in mediation skills and engaged in Newtownabbey Mediation Services. This includes refresher training and updating skills work. The Forum works on referrals from PSNI, Council and community.

Dialogue with various interest groups that have the potential to impact upon ‘relations’

 22 week course on Irish history, local history, The Troubles, guest speakers on PSNI/RUC, churches community and conflict, symbols and emblems, ethnic minorities and their story, theatre of Witness,

Open nights with Civil Rights Association, Dr Alan Bruce, Easter Rising, EX POW Consortium, Irish American speaker
