Overall aim: The aim of the Ulster Quaker Service Committee is to contribute in a practical way to the understanding and reduction of both the causes and results of violence, suffering and social malaise. This leads the group to establish projects which support those vulnerable and undervalued people in our society. Quaker Cottage aims to provide a safe and caring environment where increased self-esteem, greater family understanding and co-operation, improved social and life skills, enhanced development and mutual understanding and respect are actively promoted. Visitors Centre: To support the families of prisoners by offering a range of services and to influence policy and practice regarding penal issues in Northern Ireland.
Projects and Activities
The Committee runs a cross-community family centre (Quaker Cottage) which provides programmes to support families referred by social workers and to improve mutual understanding. It also runs a Visitors Centre at Maghaberry prison which support the families of prisoners through a variety of services including childcare, counselling, snack bar etc.
