CRC is dedicated to building a fair, inclusive and shared society based on the principles of equality, respect for diversity and the interdependence of us all. Our funding is designed to build trust though supporting inter-cultural and inter-community relationships and preventing and reducing tension, violence, intimidation and threat.
The Community Relations Council has engaged on questions of cultural celebration in many different contexts. CRC has supported a number of proposals in relation to developing better relations around bonfires and single-identity cultural celebrations. At all stages, our only interest is to promote inclusive, non-intimidatory celebration, to prevent potential tension, threat or violence and to engage all those promoting such cultural events in consideration of their implications for others in society.
Although it is not appropriate to comment on individual cases at this stage, CRC wishes to make clear that it does not condone the burning or destruction of images or effigies of any sort, especially where such actions can be understood as sectarian, racist, threatening or intimidatory. In the event that funding proposals fail to meet the criteria applied to all CRC activity in relation to these matters, CRC funding offers will be withdrawn or reduced.
