TEACHER TOOLKIT FOR COMMUNITY RELATIONS LAUNCHED

Guidelines to support teachers across Northern Ireland in the delivery of community relations programmes are available today.

The Department of Education's step by step guide, 'Community Relations Learning: A Model Of Progression' has been developed in partnership with the Education and Library Boards (ELBs) and schools, is designed to aid the delivery of effective community relations in the classroom.

Head of Policy, Research and Youth at the Department of Education, Louise Warde Hunter, said:  “The guide will help facilitate the work of schools, ensuring that community relations takes place in and between schools. Equipping teachers effectively to undertake this important area of work is essential and these guidelines will contribute to that toolkit.

“The revised curriculum being implemented in schools focuses on the development of skills, values and attitudes and it is important that schools give children and young people learning experiences which allow them to become familiar with the nature of the society in which they live.”

Speaking on behalf of the Education and Library Boards, Matt Milliken commented: “Developing and sustaining community relations programmes between schools requires great commitment and dedication from teachers.  This resource will help teachers embed community relations into a range of aspects within the revised curriculum.”
