The Community Relations Council met with the Minister for Regional Development, Danny Kennedy MLA, last week as part of a series of meetings with Ministers to discuss community relations issues within their policy remit.
During the meeting and in a tour of several interface barriers in Belfast CRC highlighted the lack of an inter-agency approach and strategy regarding interfaces and the difficulty this placed on communities which were seeking to transform barriers. The CRC view was expressed that a cross-departmental Interface Strategy needed to be enshrined in the new Programme for Government and be supported by resources. A strategy for transforming interface areas was central to the Regional Development Strategy if peace and reconciliation were to be enhanced.
CRC Chief Executive Duncan Morrow said
“CRC believes that the Department of Regional development has a major role to play in ensuring that Government addresses the legacy of conflict and invests in a shared and better future. We hope that these opportunities are reflected in the new CSI policy and the Programme for Government”.
