As part of a series of meetings with Ministers of NI Government Departments the Community Relations Council (CRC) this week met with Nelson McCausland to discuss community relations issues which arise within his policy remit.
Among the issues discussed were
Shared Space: CRC urged DSD to help develop shared and safe places for working, shopping, socialising and playing and to integrate the concept of sharing into the planning and management of assets.
Interface Areas: CRC updated the Minister on the work of the Interface Working Group chaired by CRC and urged cross-departmental support and an inter-departmental Interface Strategy at the level of the NI Executive.
Shared Housing: CRC highlighted recommendations arising from a Shared Housing seminar organised by CRC earlier this year; these included production of a cross-departmental sustainability plan for shared neighbourhoods based on learning to date. CRC also highlighted the need for strategic discussions and forward looking approaches and solutions to enable shared housing.
Duncan Morrow, CRC Chief Executive, said
“CRC believes that the Department of Social Development has a major role to play in ensuring that Government addresses the legacy of conflict and invests in a shared and better future. We hope that these opportunities are reflected in the new CSI policy and the Programme for Government”.
