Day of Reflection - Statement of Support from the Community Relations Council

17 June 2010

On 21 June many people will be marking an annual Day of Reflection to acknowledge the deep hurt and pain caused by the conflict in and about Northern Ireland. Almost 4,000 people were killed during the Troubles with countless more disabled or injured. Survivors and their families, friends and neighbours have suffered loss and trauma. We still witness  violence and even death as a result of continuing sectarianism and its consequences.

The publication this week of the Saville Report into the events of Bloody Sunday on 30 January 1972 was an emotional event for those who lost family members or friends or who were injured on that day. It reinforces the point that there is still great sensitivity and pain around events almost 40 years ago. The public apology by the British Prime Minister will go a long way to help the healing process.

The Community Relations Council supports the initiative by Healing Through Remembering to establish an annual Day of Private Reflection to encourage the whole community to recognise and remember the impact of the Troubles. If we are to move to a better future we must deal effectively with our troubled past.

Individuals can take part in the Day by finding a quiet space, alone or with family, friends or community, to reflect privately, in their own way, on the impact of the conflict. Within organisations, churches or workplaces opportunities and spaces might be created for individuals to have this moment of quiet reflection, or perhaps note down their thoughts which could be posted for others to see.

We have suffered much in Northern Ireland. Recognising and healing the hurt is an essential part of building a shared, inclusive and peaceful future.
