The Community Relations Council welcomes the publication of the Saville Report after so many years.
CRC Chair Tony McCusker said:
‘This is a historic day, and how we deal with our emotions together will be crucial in shaping the future. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and all those involved in the appalling events of 30 January 1972.
‘The Community Relations Council believes that the truth about the past can play a critical element in creating a culture of humility and acknowledgement in the face of violence. The report is an invitation to face up to the past injustices and the devastation wrought by violence.’
CRC Chief Executive Duncan Morrow said:
‘The injustice done to the victims of violence must be at the heart of all commemoration. Bloody Sunday was a terrible tragedy for the families of the bereaved and injured and for the people of Derry and a disaster for everyone seeking to build trust and inclusion in Northern Ireland and between Ireland and Britain.’
‘It is vital that we learn from the suffering and injustice of the past and vow never to go through that again. The publication of the Saville Report is a grim reminder of the bitterness of our conflicts in the past and of the necessity of building a shared, equal and better future for all.’
