The Death of David Stevens

24 May 2010

The Community Relations Council has learnt with sadness today of the death of Dr David Stevens, the Leader of the Corrymeela Community.

Tony McCusker, Chair of the Community Relations Council, said:

" Less than a month ago David received an Exceptional Achievement Award from the Community Relations Council for his lifetime work for peace and reconciliation. This reflected his achievements both at Corrymeela and with the churches but also at the Community Relations Council where he had been a founding Member of the Board and continued his association into more recent years.

"While it had been known that David was seriously ill his sudden death has come as a great shock and on behalf of the Community Relations Council I would like to express our condolences and great regret to his family and to the Corrymeela Community for the loss of a tremendous champion and advocate for peace in Northern Ireland."

Duncan Morrow, Chief Executive officer added:

"David Stevens had a rare ability to understand the central importance of reconciliation for everyone here while refusing to be either sentimental or superficial.  He will be sorely missed. "
