The North West accounts for over one third of all events in the 2009 Community Relations Week programme which features a total of 140 events across Northern Ireland. Council areas represented at the North West launch in the Guildhall included Derry City Council, Coleraine Borough Council, Moyle District Council, Strabane District Council, Limavady Borough Council and Ballymoney Borough Council.
Speaking at the North West launch of Community Relations Week, Tony Kennedy, Council member of the Community Relations Council which coordinates the week long programme of events, said:
“We think Community Relations Week is now as important as ever before given the opportunity that exists in Northern Ireland to really put the past behind us and to move forward towards a shared and better future.
“In the face of divisive challenges, the value of the community relations work that has been going on across Northern Ireland year-round has been strongly evident in recent months as the community has responded in a united and peaceful way.
“Continuing to work towards a shared future through the kinds of initiatives and projects that are represented in Community Relations Week will ensure a stable framework for the future in which Northern Ireland can prosper.
