The Belfast Peace Walls: The Problems, Politics and Policies of the Troubles Architecture

02 February 2012

Institute for research in social sciences and inter-institute peace and conflict cluster seminar series, “The Belfast Peace Walls: The Problems, Politics and Policies of the Troubles Architecture”, Dr Jonny Byrne, University of Ulster.

Since the first paramilitary ceasefires in 1994 the peace and political processes have addressed several politically sensitive issues such as policing, paramilitary decommissioning, and power sharing. However, one issue that has been absent from both processes is that of the peace walls.

Wednesday 8 February, 12.30pm, Room 4F03, Jordanstown Campus

This presentation draws upon three years of research to identify the key stakeholders in the emerging discourse that surrounds peace walls and provides an exploration of the factors and influences, which may underpin the development of a policy process on the peace walls.

Furthermore, there is an exploration of how peace walls are defined and interpreted, along with an attempt to consider how competing community and statutory agendas can be reconciled within the evolving policy debate.
