Growing up in Northern Ireland

23 November 2011

What is it like to be a child or young person in Northern Ireland? Northern Ireland is a place in transition after three decades of conflict. This study examines the lives of 18 young people growing up in (and sometimes leaving) Northern Ireland during a period of profound social and political change, from the 1990s to 2010.

The report examines:

  • the role of mobility in young lives;
  • the legacy of the 'Troubles' on transitions;
  • the factors influencing young people's response to critical events in their lives, and the impact on their mental health and wellbeing;
  • how young people connect to and participate in different communities (including local and family); and
  • how the messages from these stories could be used in policy and practice.
