Women's World United back UEFA respect message

15 November 2011

A NEW UEFA endorsed women’s intercultural football project, called Women’s World United, developed by the Irish FA in support of UEFA’s Respect campaign, was launched at the recent Northern Ireland v Iceland Women’s European Championship Qualifying Match at the Oval.

The team has been developed as part of the Irish Football Association’s EU Peace III funded Football For All Project and is supported by both the Northern Ireland Committee of Refugees and Asylum Seekers and the Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minorities.

Over 40 girls and women have participated in Women’s World United since the team was established in October 2010, with approximately 20 different nationalities involved.

Irish FA Head of Community Relations, Michael Boyd, said: “Men’s World United has been established over the last eight years and is going from strength to strength.  The development of Women’s World United took over two years and we now have a sustainable project in place which is providing opportunities for girls and women from newly arrived communities and black, minority ethnic groups to enjoy football in a safe and inclusive environment.

“Women’s World United is creating new positive role models and is a project making a meaningful difference in the community promoting the message of respect.  None of this would have been possible without the kind support of EU Peace III, UEFA, FARE (Football Against Racism Europe), Pobal and the Northern Ireland Community Relations Council.”
