Explore - 2007 Application

21 November 2006

Each year the Spririt of Enniskillen through the Explore programmes supports 50 young people, aged 16 - 19, to broaden their awareness and understanding by travelling to other countries...

The bomb in Enniskillen on Remembrance Sunday 1987 killed eleven people and injured many more. It could have provoked a response of anger and revenge; instead what emerged was forgiveness, tolerance and reconciliation - the true Spirit of Enniskillen. In a deeply divided society, the Spirit of Enniskillen pays tribute to this through working to encourage greater understanding between all social, cultural and religious traditions.

Each year the Explore programme supports 50 young people, aged 16-19, to broaden their awareness and understanding by travelling to other countries where they can have discussions with other young people who are also facing differences or conflict. On finishing, participants are expected to reflect ontheir experiences and use them to promote a culture of dialogue and learning between all social, cultural and religious traditions. As well as having time for enjoyment and fun, participants learn from discussions on issues that they see as important in their lives. The contribution of young people from all backgrounds is therefore greatly valued.

The programme starts in February and finishes in October; including 10 days preparation and evaluation in Northern Ireland as well as a 2 week project abroad in July. The programme is fully accredited through the Open College Network NI and it is expected that in applying participants are committed to attending all learning sessions and events without exceptions.

Closing date for applications 20th December, 2006.
