Community Relations, Equality and Diversity in Education

On 6 September 2010 the Department of Education published for consultation a draft Community Relations, Equality and Diversity in Education policy.

The purpose of the new policy is to contribute towards improving relations between communities by educating children and young people to develop self-respect and respect for others, promote equality and work to eliminate discrimination, and by providing formal and non-formal education opportunities for them to build relationships with those of different backgrounds and traditions within the resources available.

As part of the consultation, the Department of Education is holding a series of public events across Northern Ireland and we would welcome your attendance at one of the following venues:

10.30 am Thursday 4 November - NEELB Antrim Board Centre (Assembly Hall), 17 Lough Road, Antrim BT41 4DH.

12 noon Thursday 11 November - Omagh Community House, 2 Drumragh Avenue, Omagh BT78 1DP.

4.00 pm Wednesday 17 November - Killyhevlin Hotel, Killyhevlin, Enniskillen Co Fermanagh BT74 6RW.

10.30 am Friday 19 November - SEELB HQ (Training Room 2, Block 3), Grahamsbridge Road, Dundonald BT16 2HS.

The draft Strategy document is available from the Department of Education’s website at http://www.deni.gov.uk, together with a supporting Evidence Based Paper and consultation response document.

The consultation runs until 29 November 2010.

Notes to editors:

1. The consultation will be carried out until 29 November during which time the Department will be seeking views from, parents, children, pre-school providers, relevant interest groups and the general public on the issues raised in the draft policy.
