Two of Northern Ireland’s most troubled communities have signed up to become ‘shared neighbourhoods’ as part of an initiative created to deal with segregation and sectarianism.(Belfast Telegraph)23 September 2010

Neighbourhoods including Mount Vernon and New Lodge in north Belfast have demonstrated they live in areas working towards integration.

According to the International Fund for Ireland, 60,000 people in Northern Ireland now live in integrated neighbourhoods.

Social Development Minister Alex Attwood and Denis Rooney, chairman of the International Fund for Ireland, joined forces yesterday to celebrate the Shared Neighbourhood Programme achieving its aim of developing 30 integrated areas over a three-year period.

The areas are chosen by the Housing Executive. Once included on the list, the neighbourhoods are provided with mentoring and support.

They have access to grants and benefit from community relations training and support to design their own charter and good relations programme.
