Art and Conflict Course

25 August 2009

Applications are being sought for a challenging and innovative Art & Conflict course being delivered in Belfast by Social Theatre Lab.

The course is aimed at practitioners already working in the fields of community work and the arts or those wanting to work at a grass roots level with communities to address conflict and community development issues.

Karen McFarlane, co-ordinator of Art & Conflict said:

"As a former participant of the course, I have gained a new perspective and a whole new tool box of techniques to use in my own work.  Art & Conflict provides excellent training for arts and community practitioners that can really make a difference to communities at a grass roots level."

The preliminary sessions of the course will guide participants through the process of experiencing ‘Theatre of the Oppressed’, using games and exercises to create a space where real-life experiences can be safely explored and examined.  The techniques enable groups to consider their situation, develop other perspectives and become empowered to take decisive action on a critical issue or problem affecting their lives.

Further sessions will feature guest speakers, panel discussions and workshops representing other art forms and methodologies to work with community groups, particularly in Peace and Reconciliation work.

Social Theatre Lab is a working partnership between Partisan Productions and Ballynafeigh Community Development Association which utilises the creative potential of the arts as a tool to engender understanding, reflection and/or problem-solving in relation to challenging social and community issues.

To apply for this course please send your C.V. and a brief explanation of why you are interested in the course and what benefits you think it would bring to your own work to Karen McFarlane, Theatre Lab, c/o 283 Ormeau Road, Belfast, BT7 3GG or email to karen.mcfarlane@bcda.net.  The closing date for applications is 4th September and the course will begin on 30th September.

The course is free but participants must be available to attend on 30th September, a residential from 2nd-4th October and 11 further sessions each Wednesday until 16th December.  With the exception of the residential venues will be in Belfast and will be confirmed closer to the time.

This project is supported by the European Union European Regional Development Fund Investing in your Future.

Partisan Productions is funded by The Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the Community Relations Council
