Ulster Rugby has committed to building a better Northern Ireland by joining the One Small Step campaign.
Headed by former British and Irish Lions rugby star Trevor Ringland, the initiative aims to build a shared and peaceful future for Northern Ireland by promoting equality and respect.
In a timely move, Ulster Rugby have signed up just as the One Small Step Grant Fund has been re-launched, offering financial support to local projects building good relations in Northern Ireland.
Administered by the Community Foundation NI, the fund is now open for application by individuals across Northern Ireland and grants of up to £1500 will be awarded to successful applicants.
Trevor Ringland, who leads One Small Step, said; “We’re thrilled that Ulster Rugby has committed to the campaign and the signed jersey presented to us is a token of that commitment.
“It’s poignant as we are in the midst of Community Relations Week and already Ulster Rugby has reached out through One Small Step and groups of young people from Gaelic Athletic Clubs in Armagh recently visited Ravenhill and had a very enjoyable time.
“Small steps like these compliment the huge strides our society has made politically in recent years and we congratulate Ulster Rugby for stepping with us on our journey.”
Michael Reid, CEO of Ulster Rugby said: “Ulster Rugby is pleased to be able to take its One Small Step, by supporting the Community Foundation NI, as one of our nominated charities for the 08/09 season.
“From the grass roots game, right up to professional level, Ulster Rugby and the IRFU Ulster Branch, are dedicated to building strong and lasting community relations across our province.”
Tony McCusker, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Community Foundation NI, said; “Our organization is proud to administer the One Small Step Fund and I encourage individuals considering an application to contact us immediately.
“Applicants should have the support of a constituted community organization which can oversee their work and manage any grant monies awarded.
“The Fund can support activities working toward a shared future in Northern Ireland, involving people in peace building or inspiring them towards positive action.
“A successful applicant must be able to demonstrate community impact in spreading the One Small Step message.”
“In my role as Chair of the Community Relations Council, it’s also very poignant that this fund is re-opened in the midst of Community Relations Week and again I’m very proud that’s the case.”
