Live Issues Conference 2012

The CRC will be holding its Live Issues Conference on the 19th March (TBC) 2012. The conference is seeking to be a space for practitioners to share their practice and to dialogue with others on how peace building can be moved forward. As part of the programmes development the Council is keen to hear from groups working in the sector about what they believe are the current issues they would be keen to tackle and discuss. Traumatic Stress, Alcohol and Drug Conference

In June 2011 the Eastern Trauma Advisory Panel launched a small-scale research project report which sought to address a number of issues concerning and relating to trauma, alcohol and drug comorbidity. The resulting report was a first stage exploration of the effects of trauma and addiction and acted as part of our journey towards this seminar in which to explore the issues at greater depth. It is hoped that the information collated from the literature produced and from people working in the field of Trauma and Substance Misuse, will raise awareness and stimulate further debate on the topics outlined for this event. On 16 June Billy Tate MBE, Principal of Belvoir Primary School in Belfast, died after an illness. Trevor Ringland, Chair of the One Small Step Campaign, says ‘ Billy Tate was both a friend and a strong supporter of the ideals of the One Small Step Campaign. A strong and friendly character he showed the leadership so necessary in a society emerging from conflict that needs to heal itself. He will be sadly missed by his family, work colleagues and children at Belvoir Primary School and many friends. Since 2002, CRC has made a strong and specific organisational commitment to the future of those who suffered most directly from politically related violence in Ireland. CRC core funds 47 groups and in addition also supports up to 100 groups in their project/programme work. Since 2002, CRC has acted as the Intermediate Funding Body for groups working with victims and survivors, and this role, in particular, has made CRC acutely aware of the sensitivities and extreme difficulties associated with addressing the legacy of the past. Partners or Enemies?

The murder of Kevin McDaid was a lynch-mob killing - a planned attack on ‘Catholics’ by a murderous crowd without thought for the human costs or consequences. As in any hate crime, human beings were reduced to the value of some hated symbol- in this case football tops, colours, addresses and labels. All that mattered to the murderers in the Heights was that Kevin McDaid was one of ‘them’. Sometimes sectarianism can be denied- this time there can be no doubting that the ‘motive’ for murder was a hatred of others so deep that the lives of their victims were treated as secondary. My Day (working title) The Community Relations Council wishes to commission a series of short films (4-5 minutes duration) shot on digital video format (DigiBeta, DV Cam) focussing on the daily life of a variety of young people, aged between 12 and 16, from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds, who are now living in Northern Ireland. Each film will cover similar interests and events in each person’s life, overall detailing both similarities and differences. The series should consist of at least 10 films, and should represent a spread of locations and cultural and linguistic diversity as currently relevant in Northern Ireland. More details

People who have suffered as a result of the violent conflict in Northern Ireland are attempting to address a legacy of almost forty years of conflict. Realistically, it must be accepted that the road back to normality will take a long time for us all, but particularly for the many victims and survivors of the Troubles. It is neither fair nor accurate to measure the cost of the Troubles in purely financial terms whether it be funding or service provision. The real cost needs to be considered within the context of human suffering and the physical, emotional and psychological trauma inflicted on individuals and society as a whole. More details

With the death of David Ervine, some observers have commented that leadership in the Protestant / unionist / loyalist community is facing one of its toughest challenges yet. Last November, a Beyond the Box seminar addressed this issue under the title: ‘Where there is no vision…leadership in the Protestant/Unionist community’. At this seminar, David Ervine and Liam Clarke questioned the vision behind and the nature of political leadership in the Protestant/Unionist community. These are hard questions that need to be addressed if Northern Ireland is to move forward. Yet, leadership is not the privilege of the political elites. It is exercised in different ways at every level of our society and community life in Northern Ireland. Community leadership has a powerful influence in shaping the nature of cross-community relations. It is a vital part of wellbeing. More details
