From Aspiration to Action 2
The Community Relations Council continued its series of 'From Aspiration to Action' seminars in Belfast today. These seminars will begin the process of devising possible implementation steps to action the aspirations of A Shared Future, Government's Policy & Strategic Framework for Good Relations in Northern Ireland.
Today's seminar debated the role of the community development and community relations sectors in bringing about change in our increasingly diverse society.
The A Shared Future document acknowledges that, “Northern Ireland has benefited from an active and effective community development sector, which has provided much support to disadvantaged communities, particularly during the last 35 years of conflict.” But it goes further, “As we strive towards the creation of a more peaceful society, effective community development work will be a key factor, but it will need to shift up a gear”.
This Government document acknowledges that, “Sectarianism and racism have particularly negative impacts on disadvantaged communities. Disadvantaged and segregated communities are less likely to benefit from improved public services and a growing economy”.
At today's lively debate with a panel of key experts in the field, it was agreed that whilst the community/voluntary sector is and always has been, keen to share responsibility in improving relations in Northern Ireland it is not, and should not be alone in this task.
The research programme will culminate in a major conference, to be held in Belfast on 27 April during Community Relations Week, and will present recommendations for inclusion in Government's Triennial Action Plans.
