President visits Council
The Northern Ireland Community Relations Council today offered a warm welcome to President Mary McAleese during her first visit to the Council's offices in Belfast. Accompanied by her husband Martin the President was received by Eamonn McCartan, Chair of the Community Relations Council, and by Duncan Morrow, its Chief Executive.
Eamonn McCartan said, 'The Community Relations Council is delighted by the President's interest in our work and by the ongoing interest she takes in reconciliation on the island of Ireland and in Northern Ireland in particular. The Council leads and supports change towards a more shared future based on reconciliation, equality, co-operation, respect, mutual trust and good relations. The President will find in our work a sign of hope and expectancy for reconciliation in both good times and hard times.'
During her visit to the Council President McAleese addressed an audience of 60 guests including Council Members and staff, representatives of partner organisations and community relations workers from across the whole community.
The President also took the opportunity to meet and speak with some of those involved in the work of the Community Relations Council and with community and voluntary groups directly engaged in community relations projects across Northern Ireland.
